The Golden Gate Bridge spans the strait where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific Ocean, connecting the city to Marin County across 1.7 miles of suspended roadway. Opened in 1937, its Art Deco towers rise 746 feet and wear a colour the bridge district calls "International Orange" — chosen so the structure stays visible in the thick fog that pours through the gate on summer evenings. This archive collects original photographs that document the bridge as light and weather reshape it through the day: the south tower backlit at sunrise, the full span seen cold and clear from the Marin Headlands, and the familiar sight of the towers floating above a low marine layer while the deck below disappears entirely. Each image here was made for this archive, shot to show the bridge from a distinct vantage, hour, and mood rather than to repeat the single postcard view. Use them to study how the cables draw their long catenary curve between the towers, how the colour shifts from rust to flame as the sun drops, and how fog turns a 1930s engineering landmark into something that looks almost weightless.

Shot from the San Francisco side as the sun drops behind the headlands, the International Orange paint reads almost flame-coloured against the sky.

The classic northern vantage: the full span, both towers, and the city skyline stacked behind on a rare fog-free afternoon.

Towers above the fog

A summer marine layer swallows the deck while the tops of both towers stay in clear sun — the view that made the bridge famous.
